Fried (eds.), Biomphalaria Snails and Larval Trematodes, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4419-7028-2_2, © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011 Abstract This chapter describes the methods used by the current authors and numerous other investigators to optimize conditions for successfully growing and maintaining both uninfected and infected Biomphalaria glabrata in the laboratory, with particular emphasis on the optimal physical, chemical, and biological factors that affect successful snail rearing and/or breeding, and the ways that they can be measured. Consideration is also given to incidental organisms that can alter aquarium ecology and affect both the snails and their intended trematode parasites. Various methods of infecting snails and maintaining snail tissues and cells in vitro are also described. The goal of this chapter is to aid researchers who have the need or desire to maintain the life cycle of this pulmonate and its trematode parasites in the laboratory.

The behavioral effects of antibiotic treatment on the snail Biomphalaria glabrata
Schistosomiasis is a detrimental neglected tropical disease that is transmitted by Planorbid snails. Understanding the transmission and control of this disease requires an extensive understanding of these intermediate hosts, which is only achieved by the effective rearing and study of species such as Biomphalaria glabrata. This species is the intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni in the New...

Molecular interplay during snail-schistosome interactions is poorly understood and there is much to discover concerning the effect of snail host molecules on molecular processes in schistosomes. Using the Biomphalaria glabrata - Schistosoma mansoni host-parasite system, the effects of exposure to haemolymph, derived from schistosome-resistant and susceptible snail strains, on protein tyrosine p...
متن کاملEarly Differential Gene Expression in Haemocytes from Resistant and Susceptible Biomphalaria glabrata Strains in Response to Schistosoma mansoni
The outcome of infection in the host snail Biomphalaria glabrata with the digenean parasite Schistosoma mansoni is determined by the initial molecular interplay occurring between them. The mechanisms by which schistosomes evade snail immune recognition to ensure survival are not fully understood, but one possibility is that the snail internal defence system is manipulated by the schistosome ena...
متن کاملSchistosomes and snails: a molecular encounter
Biomphalaria glabrata snails play an integral role in the transmission of Schistosoma mansoni, the causative agent for human schistosomiasis in the Western hemisphere. For the past two decades, tremendous advances have been made in research aimed at elucidating the molecular basis of the snail/parasite interaction. The growing concern that there is no vaccine to prevent schistosomiasis and only...
متن کاملA Novel Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) Influences Compatibility between the Gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata, and the Digenean Trematode Schistosoma mansoni
Schistosomiasis, a devastating disease caused by parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, affects over 260 million people worldwide especially in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Schistosomes must undergo their larval development within specific species of snail intermediate hosts, a trait that is shared among almost all digenean trematodes. This unique and long-standing host-parasite re...
